[Homura is examining the journal when he presses the button to begin recording. He doesn't notice the change at first, as he's more interested in the device itself, so there are a few moments of quiet contemplation before he speaks softly, mostly to himself.]

Well. This isn't quite what I was expecting to happen when I died.

I would appreciate that. You've told me where we are, but would you happen to know why we're here?

[ ... actually, this really shouldn't be that unusual or anything.

MOVING RIGHT ALONG-- ]

Wow. Um, my name is Xion. It's nice to meet you, Homura.

Sure! Um-- well... The Malnosso trap us here. They're why you have wings on your back right now. They use us basically to experiment on, and fight for them... sometimes they kidnap us individually. [ a pause ] They're cruel and awful. But they're the reason behind everything that goes on around here.

[Homura says nothing in regards to the shock. He finds it rather amusing. But the rest? That will get some commentary, starting with a short, joyless laugh.]

So things really aren't that different after all.

If you feel that way, I imagine others must as well. Is anything being done to put a stop to these Malnosso?

... well ... people have tried, but there's not much we can do. They're so much more powerful than we are. People have been here for years and years and not been able to escape or anything... but it can't hurt to keep trying.

You shouldn't fool yourself. It can hurt a great deal to keep trying. If these Malnosso are as powerful as you claim, then they could cause any type of injury or pain, or even death. And if they are as cruel, then they won't hesitate to.

The question is, even if it seems a hopeless endeavor with terrible consequences, do you try anyway?

[fourteen]

[ a long pause. she has died. twice, no less. she has suffered greatly in this place. ]

... not me. Even if things are sometimes terrible here... Luceti is my home. My family is here. I wouldn't want to leave... not anymore. I just try to keep moving forward... no matter how bad it gets.

That is all anyone can do, in the end.

[Now Homura pauses, considering.] Is there a way to see if a specific person has been brought here?

Well ... you could ask. Everyone can hear and read what's said on the journals, unless you filter it.

Mhmm. It's a way of ... um, sending messages so only certain people can hear them. Like this! [ she takes a moment, aaaaand: ]

Like that. This is a pretty weak filter, though. It takes practice to make them good.
